The German Union Verdi is calling for strikes in the insurance industry in Germany. Employees in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart will strike and further locations will see protest demonstrations. Allianz, AXA, HDI/Talanx and many other insurers will be affected.
The Union cancelled the negotiations on a new collective labour agreement after the insurers rejected the Union’s claims and proposals. The draft agreement was to address the challenges of the industry in reducing costs and staff and the need for the industry to reinvent itself in the light of digitilisation. The Union’s draft agreement contains detailed proposals for safeguarding jobs, job sharing, early retirements and qualification measures to prepare employees for the new digital era.
The insurers have rejected the proposal for cost reasons, claiming that they will not be competitive if they pay for these measures. Unions then cancelled the negotiations and now call for strikes.
