Sex bomb for insurers?

During the summer, the UK papers were full of stories about a new generation of realistic, computerised sex dolls which were said to be almost as good as the real thing.

A few days ago, however, there were warnings that this new range of toys could be hacked and their controlling computers taken over. One may not want to dwell too much on the consequences of that but it has been suggested that it could lead to personal injury or even death. No doubt this will raise concerns for liability insurers asked to insure the manufacturers, designers and distributors of these devices. More broadly, however, it is an illustration of how new technologies permeate every aspect of our lives and how, therefore, cyber exposure should always be a consideration in risk assessment – otherwise, there is a danger of being caught with your trousers down…
